I love to witness the changes that Ebenezer Scrooge makes, in “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, as he is escorted one Christmas Eve by the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Future.
As he “looks” and processes the pain he feels, his heart is softened, and he begins to love and care for himself. It is then possible for him to reach out to others, to love and care for his family, friends and community. It is a beautiful transition to witness. I love it everytime, it never gets old.
Now, I understand, it’s a movie, and the changes we might want to make take longer than overnight or certainly a few hours, but being yoked with the Savior is the key for any change we want. When we are yoked with the Savior, we have added strength and courage to follow through with the steps we outline for changes, regardless of the discomfort we might feel along the way.
One of my favorite lines from the story is when Ebenezer says,
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
Let us honor Christmas in our hearts and try (because we’re humans) to keep it all the year of 2023.
